Osteopathy is a safe form of treatment during pregnancy when the effects of ligaments softening in preparation for delivery and the postural changes associated with increased anterior weight may lead to lower back pain, sciatica and problems with the pubic symphysis (pelvic girdle pain (PGP), osteitis pubis and pubalgia). Osteopathic maniuplation (high velocity thrust technique) is usually avoided at key stages in the first trimester but is safe thereafter and massage & mobilisation techniques are safe and can be used throughout pregnancy. Some patients may also experience symptoms post-natally especially when there have been complications in labour and a postural assessment and manipulation to adjust the joints of the pelvis often gives relief.
